Festa della Santa Patrona

Dal 1624, ogni anno dal 9 al 15 luglio, Palermo festeggia la patrona, la Santuzza, con un “festino” della durata di sette giorni; mentre il 4 settembre, dies natali della santa, ha luogo il pellegrinaggio alla grotta del monte Pellegrino dove ella visse a vita di contemplazione, e dove è stato edificato in suo onore un santuario; nello stesso giorno si visita la cappella della Cattedrale di Palermo, in cui è custodita la statua della santa che, secondo l’iconografia popolare, è rappresentata giovanissima, con una corona di rose bianche sul capo, in contemplazione davanti al Crocifisso che sarebbe lo specchio nel quale la santa vide riflessa l’immagine di Cristo. Il Festino rappresenta un momento storico per la città, e all’origine comprendeva tante manifestazioni che, tra sacro e profano, tra mito e leggenda, coinvolgevano tutti gli strati sociali, in una devota esaltazione della santa patrona di Palermo.
