On the borders of Umbria and Tuscany, a few kilometers from Lake Trasimeno, you arrive at Villa Stampa. Beyond the heights overlooking the lake and fields of olive groves there is a road branching off and winding its way down through an oak wood... This tiny hamlet is an old country estate dating back to 1700, consisting of the main house and other smaller ones surrounding it. It is situated in a valley known as "Pian di Marte", (the Mars plain) named after the god of war, Mars, and recalls the bloody retreat of the Romans following against Hannibal at the Battle of Trasimeno. The name Villa Stampa probably derives from "la stampa del bollo di dogana – the print of the customs stamp". The ancient house was indeed situated on the border between the territory ruled by the Grand Duke of Tuscany and that by the Pope. Today, this border location between the two regions, overlooked by an ancient mediaeval watch tower, is much appreciated by our guests. They benefit from being within easy reach of major centres of art, history and nature both in Umbria and Tuscany. But, unlike former times, one no longer has to pay the customs toll, "il dazio" to move between them. Here, you can be in communion with the countryside and its rhythms, rediscover nature and all its colours, smells and sounds, re-awaken images and memories hidden away in each and every one of us. Green are the hills that roll away in the distance. Yellow are the fields of sunflowers and the bushes of broom scattered throughout the countryside. Red are the sunsets over the lake and the oak woods in autumn. Blue is the lake On a walk in springtime, you can experience: being intoxicated by the fragrance of broom blossom (ginestra) or the even stronger herbal scent of wild fennel; encountering , as evening falls, porcupines, hares, squirrels, wild deer – all stimulated by the movement of the moon; or, as summer approaches, seeing the fireflies light up the valley, as the do every year.
