Questa chiesa era già antica ed illustre nel 1400, poiché le sue origini risalgono all'XI secolo. Con questo edificio (1658-1671), Bernini ribaltò la concezione prevalente in fatto di architettura religiosa: la chiesa ha infatti una pianta ellittica, dove l’asse più lungo è quello orizzontale, mentre il più corto va dall’ingresso all’altare maggiore. Un'elegante scalinata curvilinea conduce al protiro, sorretto da due colonne e ornato dal grande stemma papale del Principe Camillo Pamphilj, committente dell’opera; . L’interno, da molti definito "la perla del Barocco", è un gioco di luci e ombre che prelude al Rococò. Splendida la cappella maggiore con altare in bronzo dorato e lapislazzuli disegnata dallo stesso Bernini ed ornata da una bellissima raggiera dorata con angeli e cherubini di Antonio Raggi. .
