In the beautiful countryside south west of Siena, near the Abbey of Saint Galgano, the 200 ha. Papena  is dominated by this historic, stone-built hamlet, a cluster of stone-houses set around an ancient well. The hamlet is on the top of a gently sloping hill, with a large swimming pool just below it. There are extraordinary, panoramic views all around. Wooded hills in the distance and olive groves in the vicinity. Horses and sheep grazing upon cultivated meadows. The English speaking owners moved there from Rome with their horses and dogs, some years ago. They have skilfully and gently coaxed back the charm of the ancient hamlet and made guest houses. The fascinating and verdant countryside is punctuated by peaceful medieval hill villages such as Monticiano and Chiusdino ( with the 12th. C. birthplace of S. Galgano) and by monuments of extraordinary architectural and spiritual tension, such as the 13th. C. Cistercian Gothic abbey of S. Galgano and the nearby hermitage of Montesiepi. The abbey of S. Galgano, a few minutes drive away , was once the chief Cistercian house in Tuscany. An Abbot is said to have sold the lead of the roof to help pay some debts, and the graceful, roofless abbey church is now blessed with excellent acoustic for the frequent concerts held there during the summer. In the 12th century, upon that very spot Galgano, a fierce soldier of fortune, renounced his evil ways and cast his sword into the ground. Galgano was subsequently canonised. The sword is still lodged in the stone, where  he cast it and the Abbey was built up around it. Today San Galgano stands as one of the great spots of Medieval romance. The sword in the stone. You can explore the mountains and the woods, home to a rich flora and fauna, on foot, by horse or bicycle as far as the Etruscan necropolis in a wood on the estate. The owners’ show jumping horses are stabled 300 m. away and it is possible to stable guest’s own horses and use the hall and the ring and obtain show jumping, three day event and dressage lessons from a qualified teacher. The ceramic, the fabrics and the restoration work in the hamlet display a love of the area, its inherent characteristics and ancient history. Furniture is simple but well appointed. The centre square of the hamlet has an old well, a barbeque and outside furniture for each guest house. Bar/general store 5 minutes, good restaurants in the area Shops at Monticiano and Chiusdino, each under 10 minutes’ drive San Galgano 5 km, Siena 22 km, Massa Marittima 25 km, Florence 60 km, San Gimignano 35km, Chiusdino 8 km, Monticano 8 km, Sea: Argentario 50 km, Punta Ala 40 km, Follonica 40 km Weeks go from Saturday to Saturday with arrival between 3.00 p.m. and 7.00 p.m. and departure before h. 10.00 a.m.
