It is situated in a valley known as "Pian di Marte", (the Mars plain) named after the god of war, Mars, and recalls the bloody retreat of the Romans following against Hannibal at the Battle of Trasimeno. The name Villa Stampa probably derives from "la stampa del bollo di dogana – the print of the customs stamp". The ancient house was indeed situated on the border between the territory ruled by the Grand Duke of Tuscany and that by the Pope. Today, this border location between the two regions, overlooked by an ancient mediaeval watch tower, is much appreciated by our guests. They benefit from being within easy reach of major centres of art, history and nature both in Umbria and Tuscany.
